Admissions, Explained in Plain Language

Admission pathways
Understanding Your Options
These are the main lawful routes into higher education in India. The right one depends on your course, eligibility and preferences.
- 01
Entrance-based admission
Most professional programmes admit students through national, state or institution-level entrance exams, followed by counselling or a merit list. Examples include JEE Main for engineering, KCET and COMEDK UGET in Karnataka, and CAT, KMAT or PGCET for management and MCA.
- 02
Merit-based or direct admission
Many colleges and private universities admit students on the basis of Class 12 or graduation marks, or through their own application process. Availability depends on the course and institution, and regulated programmes still require the mandated exam.
- 03
Management quota
Some private institutions reserve a share of seats as management quota. These seats must be filled according to rules set by regulators, state authorities and the institution — and often carry different fees.
- 04
NRI quota
Certain institutions reserve seats for Non-Resident Indians and their eligible relatives. Eligibility, documentation and fees are defined by each institution or counselling authority.
