Bangalore is home to a large community of students from the North East. What to plan before you move, from documents and hostels to safety and community.

Every year, many students from Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Arunachal Pradesh, Tripura and Sikkim move to Bangalore to study. They choose the city for its wide range of courses, its job market and its welcoming, cosmopolitan student culture. If you are a student from the North East, or a parent supporting one, this guide covers what to plan before and after the move to Bangalore.

Why North East students choose Bangalore

  • Course variety: nursing, allied health, management, computer applications, engineering, design and law are all widely available.
  • Career opportunities: Bangalore's IT, startup, healthcare and services sectors offer internships and jobs after graduation.
  • Established community: there are large North East student and professional communities across the city, along with churches, community associations and familiar food.
  • Air connectivity: Kempegowda International Airport has direct and one-stop flights to Guwahati, Imphal, Dimapur, Agartala, Bagdogra and other airports in the region.

Choosing a course and college

Popular choices among North East students in Bangalore include B.Sc Nursing, allied health courses such as radiology, BBA and BCA. Whatever you choose:

  1. Check approvals: the regulator for the course and the affiliating university, such as RGUHS for health sciences.
  2. Ask for the full-course fee schedule, including hostel and university charges.
  3. Ask whether there are other students from the North East in the college, and whether there is a student association.
  4. Check the college's location and transport links before you commit.

Our colleges page and the parent's guide to comparing colleges can help with shortlisting.

Documents to prepare before you travel

  • Class 10 and Class 12 marks cards and passing certificates
  • Transfer certificate and migration certificate from your board, which can take time to obtain
  • Conduct certificate, Aadhaar card and passport-size photographs
  • Scheduled Tribe or other category certificates and income certificates, if you plan to apply for scholarships
  • A medical fitness certificate, especially for health science courses

Students joining health science courses will usually need an RGUHS eligibility certificate after admission. Keep originals safe, carry several attested copies and store scans online.

Hostels, PGs and where to live

For the first year, a college hostel is usually the safest and simplest option. It gives structure, meals and a ready-made group of friends. Later, many students move to PGs or shared flats near their college. Visit any accommodation in person, check the rules and get the terms in writing.

Areas in north and east Bangalore, as well as areas near large college clusters, have many North East students and familiar restaurants and grocery stores.

Getting around the city

Namma Metro is the fastest way to cross the city where it runs, and BMTC buses cover almost every area, with student passes available. Many colleges also run their own buses. Save emergency numbers, share your address with your family and college, and choose well-lit routes home.

Food, weather and everyday life

Bangalore's weather is mild for most of the year, with a rainy season that brings frequent evening showers. North East food is available in many neighbourhoods, and many students cook together in shared flats. Kannada is the local language, but English and Hindi are widely understood in colleges, shops and offices. Learning a few Kannada phrases is appreciated and helps with daily life.

Safety and support

Bangalore is a large, diverse city, and most students settle in well. A few habits help:

  • Stay in touch with your college's student welfare office and your hostel warden
  • Join a student or community association from your state
  • Keep your family informed of where you live and how you travel
  • If you face harassment or discrimination, report it to your college and, where needed, to the police

Scholarships and financial planning

Check scholarships from your home state, central schemes on the National Scholarship Portal and any institutional scholarships. Our guide to finding scholarships explains where to look. Many banks also offer education loans for recognised courses.

A checklist for the first month

  1. Complete your college registration and any pending document submissions.
  2. Open a local bank account and get a local SIM card.
  3. Learn your daily route to college and the nearest hospital and pharmacy.
  4. Meet seniors from your state and join a student association.
  5. Set a monthly budget for food, travel and personal expenses.

Advice for parents

Sending a child far from home is a big step. Visit the college and hostel with your child if you can, meet the warden and save their number. Agree on a regular time to talk each week, and keep a copy of every important document at home. Encourage your child to build friendships both within the North East community and beyond it, which helps them feel at home faster.
