Bangalore is one of India's busiest centres for nursing education. Its large network of multi-speciality hospitals gives students regular clinical exposure, and every year families from Karnataka, Kerala, the North East, Jammu and Kashmir and many other states plan nursing admission in Bangalore. This guide walks you through the courses, eligibility rules, Karnataka-specific steps and the questions to ask before you choose a college.
Nursing courses you can study in Bangalore
Most nursing colleges in Bangalore offer some or all of the following programmes. Each one leads to a different starting point in your career, so pick the one that matches your qualification today.
- [B.Sc Nursing](/courses/bsc-nursing): a four-year degree after Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Biology. It is the most common choice for students who want to become registered nurses.
- [GNM](/courses/gnm): a diploma in General Nursing and Midwifery. Its status and intake rules are set by the Indian Nursing Council (INC) and the state, so check the current position before you apply.
- [Post Basic B.Sc Nursing (PBBN)](/courses/pbbn): a two-year degree for nurses who already hold a GNM diploma.
- [M.Sc Nursing](/courses/msc-nursing): a two-year postgraduate degree with specialisations such as medical-surgical, child health, community health, obstetrics and psychiatric nursing.
You can compare all of these on our nursing courses page.
Eligibility for B.Sc Nursing in Bangalore
Eligibility is set by the INC and the affiliating university. For B.Sc Nursing, colleges usually ask for:
- A pass in Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English
- The minimum aggregate marks set by the INC and the university for your category
- The minimum age set by the INC, usually counted on 31 December of the admission year
- A medical fitness certificate
Percentages and age rules can be revised, so confirm the current figures on the official INC and university websites rather than relying on older guides.
The role of RGUHS and Karnataka bodies
Most nursing colleges in Bangalore are affiliated to the Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences (RGUHS). RGUHS sets the syllabus, conducts university examinations and awards the degree. Colleges must also hold approval from the INC and the Karnataka State Nursing Council for each academic year.
If you studied Class 12 outside the Karnataka State Board, you will usually need an eligibility certificate from RGUHS. Most colleges help students apply for it after admission, but keep your marks cards, migration certificate and transfer certificate ready so the process is not delayed.
How seats are allotted
Nursing seats in Karnataka fall into broad groups. Government-quota seats are allotted through the state process run by the Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA), which has used KCET ranks for nursing in recent years. Private and management seats are filled by colleges under state and university rules.
The details change from year to year, including which entrance scores are accepted and how seat matrices are published. Follow the official KEA and RGUHS notifications, and treat any WhatsApp forward or third-party calendar as unconfirmed until you see the same information on an official site. Our article on management and NRI quota seats explains how to spot misleading offers.
Step-by-step admission process
- Shortlist courses and colleges based on your marks, budget and preferred part of the city.
- Check that each college has current INC, Karnataka State Nursing Council and RGUHS approval.
- Apply through the KEA process for government seats, or directly to the college for other seats.
- Attend document verification with originals and photocopies.
- Pay fees only to the college or authority through documented channels, and keep every receipt.
- Complete the RGUHS eligibility certificate process if your board requires it.
Choosing a nursing college in Bangalore
Two colleges with the same course name can offer very different training. Compare them on the same points.
Parent hospital and clinical postings
Ask where clinical postings happen, how many beds the parent or partner hospital has and which specialities students rotate through. Bangalore's hospital ecosystem is large, but postings vary widely between colleges.
Location and daily travel
Nursing students often have early-morning postings. Check how far the college and hospital are from your hostel or PG, and whether Namma Metro or BMTC bus routes cover the journey. A college in an area such as Kothanur, Hennur or Banaswadi may suit students staying in north-east Bangalore, while others are closer to the southern or western suburbs.
Hostel and safety
For students moving from another state, a college hostel or a verified PG close to campus makes the first year much easier. Ask about curfew times, mess food, wardens and transport to the hospital.
Total cost for all four years
Ask each college for a written breakdown of tuition, hostel, uniform, examination and university fees for every year of the course, not just the first. Then compare like with like.
Colleges we work with include Banaswadi Group of Institutions and Ebenezer Group of Institutions. You can browse more on our colleges page.
Tips for students from Kerala, J&K and the North East
Bangalore has large student communities from Kerala and the North East, so finding familiar food, churches, temples and friends is usually easy. Overnight trains and buses connect the city to most of Kerala, and the Kempegowda International Airport serves the North East and Jammu and Kashmir.
Plan for the RGUHS eligibility certificate early, carry extra attested copies of every document and check whether you qualify for scholarships from your home state. Students from Jammu and Kashmir can look at central schemes listed on the AICTE website and check whether their course and college are covered. Our guide to finding scholarships lists more places to look.
