Every year, a growing number of students from Jammu and Kashmir choose Bangalore for higher education. They come for nursing, allied health, physiotherapy, management, computer applications and engineering, drawn by the city's wide choice of colleges, its hospital and technology industries, and a supportive community of students from home. If you are a student from Jammu and Kashmir, or a parent supporting one, this guide covers what to plan before and after moving to Bangalore.
Popular courses among J&K students in Bangalore
- B.Sc Nursing and other nursing programmes
- Allied health courses such as radiology, lab technology and OT technology, listed on our allied health courses page
- Bachelor of Physiotherapy (BPT)
- BBA, BCA and B.Tech
- MBA and MCA for graduates
Choose based on your interests, Class 12 subjects and long-term goals rather than only on what friends are doing.
Admission routes for students from Jammu and Kashmir
Admission routes in Bangalore depend on the course:
- Health science courses (nursing, allied health, physiotherapy) at most private colleges admit students on Class 12 marks under RGUHS rules. Government seats follow Karnataka Examinations Authority (KEA) processes.
- Engineering seats are usually through COMEDK UGET for member private colleges, JEE Main where accepted, or private university entrance tests. KCET government seats are mainly for Karnataka-eligible candidates.
- Management and computer applications courses often admit on Class 12 or degree marks, or through university tests and national exams.
Our guide to management and NRI quota seats explains how to spot misleading admission offers.
Scholarships for J&K students
Students from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh may be eligible for central special scholarship schemes for study outside the region, along with other central schemes on the National Scholarship Portal. Each scheme has its own rules about courses, colleges, marks and family income, and the list of covered colleges and courses can change.
Check the current scheme details on the official AICTE website and the National Scholarship Portal before you choose a college, and confirm whether your course and college are covered. Our guide to finding scholarships lists more places to look.
Documents to prepare before you travel
- Class 10 and Class 12 marks cards and passing certificates
- Transfer certificate and migration certificate from JKBOSE or your board, which can take time
- Domicile, category and income certificates if you plan to apply for scholarships
- Conduct certificate, Aadhaar card and passport-size photographs
- A medical fitness certificate for health science courses
Health science students will usually need an RGUHS eligibility certificate after admission. Keep originals safe, carry several attested copies and store scans online.
Travel and arriving in Bangalore
Flights connect Srinagar and Jammu to Bangalore, usually with one stop, and long-distance trains run from Jammu. Plan to arrive a few days before classes start so you can settle into your hostel, complete registration and learn your route to college.
Hostels, food and everyday life
A college hostel is usually the easiest option in the first year. Ask about room sharing, meals, curfew times and whether there are other students from Jammu and Kashmir. Many students later move to PGs near their college or clinical postings.
Bangalore's weather is mild compared with winters at home, with a rainy season that brings frequent showers. Food from many regions is available, and students often find restaurants and grocery stores that serve familiar dishes. Mosques, temples, gurdwaras and churches are spread across the city.
Getting around
Namma Metro is the quickest way across the city where it runs, BMTC buses cover almost every area, and many colleges run their own buses. Save emergency numbers, share your address with your family and college, and choose well-lit routes home.
