Studying in Bangalore can be expensive once you add tuition, accommodation, food and travel. Scholarships can reduce that burden significantly, but many families miss out because they start late or do not know where to look. This guide explains the main sources of scholarships for students studying in Bangalore, who they are usually meant for, and how to prepare a complete application, whether you are from Karnataka or moving from Kerala, Jammu and Kashmir, the North East or another state.

Where scholarships come from

Scholarships for college students in India usually come from four places:

  1. Central government schemes, most of them listed on the National Scholarship Portal (NSP)
  2. State government schemes, through each state's scholarship portal
  3. Institutional scholarships, offered by colleges and universities based on merit or need
  4. Private and charitable trusts, foundations and corporate social responsibility programmes

Most students can apply to more than one, as long as the rules of each scheme allow it.

Central schemes on the National Scholarship Portal

The National Scholarship Portal lists many central schemes, including those for students from minority communities, Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes, students with disabilities and merit-based schemes. Eligibility usually depends on family income, category, marks and the course.

Create your NSP profile early, read each scheme's guidelines carefully and note its deadline. Some schemes require verification by your college, so inform the college's scholarship office once you apply.

AICTE also runs schemes for students in technical and management courses. Check the official AICTE website for current schemes and eligibility.

Karnataka state scholarships

Karnataka runs several scholarship and fee concession schemes through its State Scholarship Portal (SSP), mainly for students who meet Karnataka residence and category conditions. If you are a Karnataka student, ask your college's scholarship office which schemes apply to your course and category, and apply as soon as the portal opens.

Students admitted through KEA counselling may also be eligible for fee concessions linked to their category. Check the details in the current KEA information bulletin.

Home-state scholarships for students from other states

If you are moving to Bangalore from another state, check your home state's scholarship portal. Some states support students studying outside the state, especially in professional courses, while others limit schemes to institutions within the state.

  • Kerala students should check Kerala government and community schemes and whether they cover study in Karnataka.
  • North East students should check their state's schemes, especially those for Scheduled Tribe students, and central schemes on the NSP.
  • Students from Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh should check central special scholarship schemes, along with any listed on the AICTE website, and confirm whether their course and college are covered.

Institutional scholarships in Bangalore

Many colleges and universities in Bangalore offer their own scholarships or fee waivers based on Class 12 marks, entrance scores, sports, financial need or other criteria. Ask each college on your shortlist:

  • Which scholarships are available for your course?
  • What are the eligibility criteria and the deadline?
  • Is the scholarship for the first year only, or renewable each year?
  • What marks or attendance are needed to keep it?

Compare scholarships alongside the full-course fee when you choose a college. You can browse colleges on our colleges page and read the parent's guide to comparing colleges.

Documents you will usually need

  • Class 10 and Class 12 marks cards
  • Income certificate from the competent authority
  • Caste or category certificate, if applicable
  • Aadhaar card and a bank account in the student's name, often linked to Aadhaar
  • Admission letter and fee receipt from the college
  • Bonafide or study certificate from the college

Keep scanned copies ready in the formats the portals require.

Tips for a successful application

  1. Start early. Many portals open only for a few weeks each year.
  2. Read each scheme's guidelines fully before you apply.
  3. Make sure your name matches exactly across Aadhaar, bank account and certificates.
  4. Track your application status and respond quickly to any query.
  5. Keep copies of every submission and acknowledgement.
  6. Never pay anyone who promises to "get" you a scholarship. Genuine schemes do not charge application fees through agents.

Courses where scholarships make a big difference

Professional courses such as B.Sc Nursing, B.Tech and allied health degrees often have higher total costs because of their length and clinical or lab charges. For these courses, combining a government scholarship with an institutional fee waiver or an education loan can make a significant difference.

Frequently asked questions

Can students from other states get scholarships in Bangalore?

Yes, through central schemes, some home-state schemes and institutional scholarships. Karnataka state schemes usually have residence conditions.

Can I apply for more than one scholarship?

Often yes, but some schemes do not allow you to hold two government scholarships at once. Read each scheme's rules.

When should I apply for scholarships?

As soon as portals open, usually after admission. Note each deadline, as they differ.

Do I need a bank account in Bangalore to receive a scholarship?

Not necessarily. Most schemes need a bank account in the student's name, often linked to Aadhaar. Check the scheme's rules.

Are education loans a good alternative?

Loans can help cover what scholarships do not. Compare interest rates and repayment terms directly with banks.

What if my scholarship payment is delayed?

Check your application status on the portal, confirm your bank details are correct and speak to your college's scholarship office. Delays are common, so plan your first-year fees without relying on scholarship money.
